Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx at 7nm and enhanced performance for PC with Windows 10

Κduring the event in Hawaii for Snapdragon processors, Qualcomm not only presented Snapdragon 855 at 7nm and connection to 5G networks but also the Snapdragon 8cx with improved performance for Windows 10 PCs.

The Snapdragon 8cx is the successor to the Snapdragon 850 which was a modified version of the Snapdragon 845, and is the company's first SoC built specifically for Windows 10 computers. It is based on the 7nm architecture and will be ready for mass production on computers that will be released in the third quarter of 2019.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8cx will double the performance of the Snapdragon 850 and can be compared to the performance of the Intel Core i5 U series in native Windows ARM applications. It should be noted that the Snapdragon 850 performed better in multi-core benchmark than the i5-6300U, so it may be justified that the Snapdragon 8cx will be better than this particular Intel Core i5 U series.

In terms of GPU, the Adreno 680 will be able to handle dual 4K HDR screens and will provide 4K HDR video playback at 120fps. The 8cx CPU cores are the Kryo 495 and there is a built-in X24 Cat.20 LTE modem with speeds that can theoretically reach 2Gbps and 316Mbps download and upload respectively.

There is additional support for third generation PCI-E and second generation USB 3.1 peripherals as well as support for NVMe SSD storage. The built-in Hexagon 685 DSP will allow the use of digital assistants such as Cortana and Alexa, while Qualcomm's fourth generation AI is available. Bluetooth could not be missing since it supports Bluetooth 5.0, Quick Charge 4+, while from the features of the new processor it seems that we have the fastest Snapdragon processor to date since the heat management is better at 2-in-1 laptop than in the limited space of smartphones. We should not forget that the "cx" in the name of the processor corresponds to "compute" and "extreme", indicating that Qualcomm intends it specifically for computers that will be more competitive than ever.

Qualcomm even promises many days of device autonomy to be equipped with the Snapdragon 8cx, which is the company's first certified processor for Windows 10 Enterprise, something that is useful for use by companies that want computers that rely on this platform.
