Her days classic plastic SIM card are measured, as more and more telecommunications providers and Smartphone manufacturers tend to offer their services through eSIM card

Τbut is this n “embedded Subscriber Identity Module” or eSIM for short? In this article he published the nextpit, explains how it works eSIM and what are its advantages.

What is an eSIM and what is it for?

The "embedded” SIM also known as eSIM is less than one nano-SIM and is permanently embedded in the device. Unlike a conventional SIM card, the eSIM cannot be removed, but can only be replaced via software. Therefore, eSIM is excellent for all devices that are particularly small in dimensions, such as for example smartwatches.

You can also be more flexible and independent with an eSIM. No more wasting time waiting for your new SIM card to arrive in the mail or having to visit a telecom provider's retail store to purchase it and insert it into your device.

You can also quickly switch between the different connection plans offered by the operators in an instant, since once you receive the new activation code, you will be able to activate the eSIM card in the new package you have chosen immediately or in just a few minutes.

Also, roaming features will no longer be difficult as you will be able to switch to another provider very easily when you are abroad. Of course, eSIM is also more practical as you will no longer have to look for the little pin-shaped puller to insert or remove the SIM card from the Tray, which always miraculously disappears and we search to find it when we need it. .

Which smartphones and devices use eSIM?

Even three years after eSIMs were first released, even today we still find only a few smartphones with built-in eSIM. But this is not surprising, as eSIM is mainly required in devices that are very small in size. Therefore, it is not surprising that wearable devices such as smartwatches were some of the first devices in the consumer electronics market to use eSIM.

Smartphone with eSIM

Smartphones with eSIM usually have an additional slot (SIM tray) for they also accept the classic plastic SIM card that can be activated and work alongside the eSIM. This hybrid solution is considered a good compromise that will help customers make a smoother transition to the new system with eSIMs.

Usually only one active eSIM it can exist on a Smartphone, but the Apple, has already made progress and allows you to activate two eSIMs at the same time iPhone 13 Pro.

Ordering, activating and setting up the eSIM

Today in Greece all telecommunications providers (Cosmote, Vodafone, Wind), offer you the ability to sign up for one of their programs through an application they provide or by scanning one QR code, and your number will be activated after a few minutes at eSIM of your device. Alternatively, you can also call the hotline of almost all providers to activate remotely, without having to go to their store. Of course, this only applies if you are already a customer of the specific provider and they already have all your details and the copies they need (ID etc.) recorded in their customer base.

Finally, there may also be some differences in the cost of the eSIM: some customers may not be required to pay additional costs to activate the eSIM, while other providers may charge you some monthly fee in the form of a subscription package, regarding the minimum period of contract, this also depends on the individual plan you have chosen.

To activate an eSIM, you'll need to pull information from your carrier's websites, as the process can vary from carrier to carrier, and usually they might ask you to do something as simple as scan a QR code, select a profile and enter your security PIN and you're good to go!

Sometimes you may also be asked to eID of your device. You can find it eID in Settings under device information for the eSIM ID or you can find it in the device packaging.

Manage, transfer and delete eSIM profiles

After one is set eSIM profile, this is permanently stored on your device. If you want to use a different profile when you travel, you can simply deactivate your home profile temporarily and activate a new one. Currently, manufacturers and mobile operators have not yet exploited its full potential eSIM. In theory, you could download a profile, similar to apps from the Play Store, and change those profiles as and when required.

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer the profile of an activated eSIM to another device. So if you need to change your smartwatch or smartphone, you will need to order a new profile from your carrier. This is usually done for free. However, some providers charge subscribers some extra cost for this process.

Η eSIM it also cannot be physically removed from the device without damaging it. This has both its advantages and disadvantages. An advantage is that stolen smartphones can be tracked by you and the police using the eSIM which is impossible to remove from the device without damaging it.

The downside is that you will need to delete the eSIM profile you have activated on your device before for example selling your smartphone to someone else, and of course you will need a new eSIM profile or a classic SIM card for your new smartphone.
