In the "target" of the Consumer Ombudsman the platforms for online food ordering!

ΣThe Consumer Ombudsman's target is the platforms for electronic food ordering after a complaint and the imposition of a fine on a company cooperating with such a platform.

The issue arose after a complaint from a consumer, a regular user of a platform that provides online food ordering services, who appealed to the Consumer Ombudsman, having found that the prices of products supplied by a specific, cooperating with the platform, catering company were higher, compared to with the prices that were valid for sale within its physical store.

It is noted that this practice constitutes a market violation and entails the imposition of sanctions, as it is prohibited by law to have or arise in any way in a store different selling prices of goods.

In this context, according to information from APE-MPE, the Consumer Ombudsman cooperated for the investigation of the case with the competent Department of Commerce of the relevant Regional Unit, which imposed a fine on the audited company, after carrying out audits that confirmed the consumer's allegations.

New framework for action


At the same time, taking into account that online food ordering services are becoming more and more popular, as well as that similar phenomena of illegal practices make it necessary to more effectively protect the rights of consumers, the Consumer Ombudsman addressed recommendation to the company that manages the specific platform, pointing to the need for extensive sampling of the price lists of the cooperating companies, in order to ensure that the prices of their products are the same as those applicable for sale within their stores and thus to avoid cases of unfair and hidden charges to the detriment of unsuspecting consumers.

The Deputy Consumer Advocate Athena Kontogianni stated to APE-MPE that "The Consumer Ombudsman monitors the issue in terms of electronic platforms in general, so that, if there is a systematicity of such infringing phenomena, to intervene with more targeted Recommendations, and in cooperation with the competent supervisory authorities, to the companies operating in the specific market. . The aim always remains the most effective protection of consumers from all kinds of unfair commercial practices».
