NVidia: Introduces CMP Series Intended for Cryptocurrency Mining

Η NVIDIA officially announces new product family specifically designed to meet demand from cryptocurrency mining workloads.

ΤAt the same time, the company announced that its driver RTX 3060 will include software restrictions for cryptocurrency mining-specific workloads Ethereum, reducing by half the maximum theoretical hashrate which could be achieved from the hardware.

The new product family, called CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) series, will have products under the brand name HX and will be available in four different tiers: 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX. These products they will not have a screen output and therefore will not work for gaming use.

Her position NVIDIA is that their new product will contribute to the effort to restore normalcy to the overall distribution of graphics cards GeForce, which are marketed and intended for gaming. The new CMP series will be distributed by authorized NVIDIA partners such as ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, Palit and PC Partner (more can be added later). There is currently no information on the chips that actually power these "graphics" cards.

Of course, the success of this move depends on whether the driver restrictions are not limited to the graphics card. RTX 3060 It is not clear from the NVIDIA press release whether other graphics cards RTX 30 will have corresponding restrictions.

Even if the NVIDIA If these drivers were released, the miners would choose not to update their software. Also, once performance constraints are at the software and not hardware level, it may be a matter of days, even hours, to bypass.

The other factor is, of course, pricing: miners always seek the best price / performance ratio, to a much greater extent than gamers. Therefore, if Nvidia priced these products at higher prices, on the grounds that they were for profit, miners would continue to opt for GeForce products.

The cards 30HX and 40HX will be available within the first quarter of this year, while the most powerful 50HX and 90HX will appear in 2nd quarter.

Many users who can not afford to buy a new generation graphics card received the news with enough skepticism: Some comment that software restrictions will be easily circumvented, others note that the performance of CMP cards does not seem more efficient than a "classic" latest generation RTX card, while others dispute that miners will prefer them as they will not be able to resell them. when they "finish their job".
