Intel: 77 new security issues announced by Intel on many CPUs

One of them even seems to have the greater impact on performance, show measurements.

Η Intel recognized even more security issues in its processors and in its monthly report this month released 77 new vulnerabilities, not only to CPUs, but also to other subsystems such as Intel graphics and its ethernet controllers.

67 of them were identified by Intel in its internal tests, while the remaining 10 come from external sources who contacted the company for their solution, something that happens quite often and 'quietly' with many other companies in the field.

The volume of potential exploits may be large, but one of them seems to pique the interest of those who are interested in the performance of their systems. The JCC Erratum affects all recent generations of processors of the company Coffee Lake, Amber Lake, Cascade Lake, Skylake, Whiskey lake, Comet Lake, Kaby Lake and has to do with the nearby CPU cache and can be limited through firmware update.

Phoronix measurements in Linux environment showed that in some workloads the drop in performance is real and greater than the 'up to 4%' claimed by the company. To compensate for the drop in performance, Intel has made available on the Linux platform a tool that takes care to limit 'jump' commands until the software is properly upgraded.

In gaming applications the decline is still evident in some of the titles tested, while in others it is zero with losses of 1 to 3 frames on average.
