South Korea will become the first country to launch 5G services on Friday, featuring state-of-the-art wireless technology with Samsung's 5G-enabled smartphone, the Galaxy S10.
ΌAccording to Reuters, the country is in a "race" with China, the US and Japan for 5G, hoping that this technology will stimulate innovation in areas such as "smart" cities and autonomous vehicles, and strengthen economic development.
"It is essential that South Korean telecommunications companies provide services and networks that meet the high standards of South Korean customers in speed and image quality," said Ryu Jung-sang, executive vice president of SK Telecom, on Wednesday.
5G is expected to change the landscape in the gaming industry as well, as it allows the streaming of games with minimal delay, in order to be played on smartphones, Rio added.
This technology can offer 20 times faster data speeds than 4G LTE networks and provide better support for artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies with low latency. In some cases the speeds can be 100 times higher.
South Korean providers have spent huge sums on 5G promotion, and on Wednesday SK Telecom unveiled K-pop stars and an Olympic gold medalist as its first 5G customers.
SK Telecom is working with SK Hynix to set up an advanced 5G technology plant, Rio added. The company expects about one million 5G customers by the end of 2019. Currently, it has 27 million users.
The competitor KT Corp intends to provide cheaper programs compared to its LTE service, with unlimited data and programs for the purchase of 5G devices.
Samsung was the first to introduce a 5G phone in February, when it unveiled the Galaxy S10 5G and a folding $ 2.000 smartphone, which, according to analysts, took the lead in the 5G "race". Competitor LG Electronics plans to launch its own 5G in South Korea later this month.
In the US, Verizon plans to launch its own 5G network in two cities on April 11.
"I do not think we have a security issue in South Korea," said Park Jin-hyo, head of SK's technology research center. Telecom, adding that the company uses technology to prevent eavesdropping and hacking on 5G networks.
South Korea's three largest telecommunications companies, SK Telecom and KT Corp. do not use Huawei 5G equipment - but use LG Uplus.
