EETT: Satisfactory coverage of 4th generation mobile telephony networks in Greece

The coverage of mobile telephony networks has significantly improved, according to the National Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT).

Η A new campaign for measuring and defining the quality indicators of the mobile telephony services provided to the public, carried out at the end of 2017 by the National Telecommunications & Post Commission, shows that both the coverage and the quality of the 4th generation services have significantly improved. The three companies, Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind Hellas, compete very closely with each other in the level of service provision, access and data transmission in various areas of Greece where the EETT metering campaign took place.

This was not the case a year ago, when a corresponding measure by the National Telecommunications & Post Commission (end of 2016) showed that Cosmote appeared to provide the best coverage by distance from its other two competitors. In addition, the mobile phone company appeared to provide the best level of mobile services and Internet access, whether in terms of speed or data transmission reliability.

The new evaluation of EETT, although it presents a superiority of Cosmote in the points, nevertheless it seems that the level of service provision is caused by Vodafone. The latter seems to prevail mainly in urban centers, while Cosmote dominates in the countryside. It is noteworthy that even Wind, which used to be a distance from the first two, is now very close to the level of mobile access services. In terms of points (eg Tripoli) the third mobile telephony company has better coverage (99,89%) than both of its competitors.

The measurements of the National Telecommunications & Post Commission show that the 4th generation services in mobile telephony are now particularly mature in the Greek market. All three providers show a level of "good" coverage of over 80%, while in many areas, such as e.g. in large urban centers, the "good" coverage exceeds 90% or even 98%.

This metering campaign was the second in a row to measure the coverage and availability of mobile radio networks.

In the present evaluation, the measurements were made in the fall of 2017, but the results are published almost 18 months later.

In this context, the indicator "Network availability-radio coverage (M01)" was measured, which indicates the geographical coverage for the provision of any service through a mobile service network, the indicator "Possibility of voice call interception (M02)" etc. The most important, however, are the indicators of LTE technology radio coverage, ie 4th generation mobile telephony, data transmission speed, etc. The measurements of the National Telecommunications & Post Commission were made in the Attica basin, in Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Ioannina, Kavala, Tripoli, Larissa and Volos. Also on the national highways of Athens - Thessaloniki, Athens - Patras, Antirrio - Ioannina, Corinth - Tripoli etc.
