Η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή announced that, after seven years of preparation, it will now be possible for anyone interested to create a website .eu fully with characters of the Greek alphabet.
ΣThe aim is to support multilingualism and multiculturalism in the European Union and at the same time to have a greater possibility of choosing domain names on the Internet.
The non-profit organization EURid is the registrar of .eu, .ev and .ею (Cyrillic) Internet domain names. It was preceded by the creation of the Cyrillic .ею in June 2016 and from 14 November 2019 the Greek .ευ.
Users will now be able to create an entire domain name in Greek characters, such as euro.ev. Existing domain names with Greek characters in their first part and ending in .eu will have a margin of three years to "migrate" to .ev. On November 14, 2022, the mixed names of websites that have Greek characters but end in .eu will be abolished.
.Eu will thus be available to all European alphabets, something that will enhance its use further. Today it is the seventh largest domain name on the Internet, with 3,7 million European Union citizens and businesses using a .eu domain name.
