Wi-Fi radiation at home - What applies to children

For several years now, there has been intense concern about the possible effects of electromagnetic radiation from wireless networks (Wi-Fi) and for this reason many studies have been done, but they end up with conflicting results.

ΠMany people are concerned about the effect of Wi-Fi radiation on our health and, above all, on the health of children. People with unexplained and recurring headaches, dizziness and skin irritation are said to have these problems due to sensitivity to electromagnetic field sources. It is a disease also called Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EMH), according to the WHO.

A few years ago, France announced that it was banning the use of Wi-Fi in the country's kindergartens. The international media have highlighted the potential dangers of the new technology. Many of these concerns, however, are due to exaggeration and deception.

At least that's what Ian Douglas, chief technology officer at the British Telegraph, claims. See what he has to say about all this:

Hypothesis: Wi-Fi carries an increased risk of cancer

No, that is not true. What is true is that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO) has classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields - including those from cordless telephones - as category "2b". It is the relevant assessment of the potential carcinogenic risks to humans. But this is by no means a proof of cancer risk. You see, 2b is a "potentially carcinogenic" source and, along with Wi-Fi, this category also includes the coffee you drink, carpentry and pickled vegetables! There is some evidence, but the hypothesis that Wi-Fi causes cancer has not been proven.

Lawmakers in France themselves say no such link has been established (see Annex: Published French Survey 2013). Le Monde reports that lawmakers have found no causal link between the biological effects of Wi-Fi on animal or human cells and the potential health effects. There is only some limited scientific evidence from a single study, which is unconfirmed by others. These indicate a risk for those who are intensive mobile phone users.

What does all this tell us about Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi routers have weaker transmitters even than cellular antennas. Also, users usually sit away from them. The level of power generated by a Wi-Fi router is very low. That is, it is not able to disrupt human DNA, so there is no way it can be carcinogenic. It is true that they have the same frequency as microwave radiation. But it is so low power that there is not even a change in heating, let alone an influence on the genetic material.

Hypothesis: Wi-Fi affects people who are hypersensitive to radiation

Indeed, some people suffer from headaches, nausea, fatigue, blurred vision, etc. which they consider to be due to Wi-Fi. There is, however, no evidence that this is due to electromagnetic signals from Wi-Fi routers and cell phones. All the symptoms can be due to many different causes.

There is also a small study in which supposedly "electrosensitive" people were able to figure out when a cell phone was turned off. It is impossible to prove that these subjective feelings are not caused by the waves emitted by electronic devices. However there is no reason to believe that they are actually caused by them.

Wi-Fi occupies the same part of the spectrum as a microwave oven. This may sound terribly disturbing. If something can boil water, it's definitely bad for humans, right? Well, no! Not at such low power. We are talking about a power that is proportional to the cosmic radiation, or the echo from the big bang that is still diffused in space! That is, literally, there is not a single point in the universe that does not have some level of microwave.

The extreme attitude of "to close everything"

Why not be cautious, though? Why risk the symptoms in us and our children when we can simply turn off W-Fi and our cell phones? If you do, then you should do it for all things in category 2b, right? And then, why is France focusing only on W-Fi and not on everything else?

The reason he banned wireless communication in kindergartens is because it is a relatively new technology and lawmakers wanted to reassure parents, who are not entirely sure about exactly how Wi-Fi works. Parents are, quite rightly, very concerned about how anything new around them could theoretically affect their children's health. Some things are difficult to measure and we do not really know what exactly will happen after several years. But to say that Wi-Fi is a cause of cancer or even a headache is not true. Because all the researches that have been done have not proved such a thing.
