A fine of 50 million euros was imposed on Google by the French regulatory services for violating the new European Union regulations on personal data protection - the famous GDPR.
ΠThis is by far the largest fine ever imposed under the GDPR and the first against a US tech giant.
The French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) announced that Google did not validly ask for its users' consent to the use of data used for targeted display of ads.
He also accused the search engine of not providing sufficient or satisfactory information to users regarding the collection and retention of their data.
"Despite the measures taken by Google […], the shortcomings that are being attributed deprive users of fundamental guarantees regarding the procedures that may reveal parts of their personal life", CNIL typically states.
Although the amount is small for Google data, may prove to be the kick-off for imposing penalties by European authorities using the GDPR tool.
