The 'SMR scandal' with NAS hard drives

Mechanical hard disk makers have been found to use the 'slow' data burning method SMR, against her RCM and some customers misunderstood it.

Ο  reason for Western Digital, The Seagate but also the Toshiba which did not provide clear information on the type of magnetic recording of their data, causing headaches to administrators of multiple RAID arrays, since in an attempt to repair, the process refused to be completed when CMR + SMR drives were involved, due to the different recording method.

The problem got bigger as the technology label should be listed to avoid such misunderstandings.

The method SMR is considered inferior in speed by the CMR, as it places the write tracks closer to each other than the CMR, which results in lower consumption and higher capacities at the expense of recording speeds.

The non-specification of the recording method on drives that are otherwise intended for NAS and high-performance applications is a problem and so WD and Toshiba gave all the information the end users want to make the right choice.

Western Digital clarified in a blog post the drives that use SMR and CMR methods while Seagate stated that it never promoted NAS drives (IronWolf / IronWolf Pro) with SMR technology, while all the drives that seem to have it, are intended for simple, home use.

Toshiba on the other hand stated that the PT300 series of 4TB and 6TB are not intended for NAS but still use the SMR recording method, but without mentioning it in their specs, something that should happen, both in the official sheet that accompanies them. as well as marketing material, as reported by multiple sources.
