Research: Online trolls are usually m @ L @ qE $ in their real life

According to a survey conducted by University of Aarhus, the Internet does not encourage people to behave badly and inappropriately - as they already have such behavioral characteristics.

Τoffers them, however, the opportunity to express themselves seamlessly and unhindered. Therefore, it is not responsible for Internet for the existence of rude, arrogant, ill-intentioned and absolute people, but does not cease to be the greatest means of their expression.

The survey was published in American Political Science Review and essentially focuses on why people perceive the online environment more hostile than the natural environment.

In an attempt to locate the finding, they decided to investigate the internal conflict that people face when interacting with other users online. In real life, everyone is kind when they know a person, however, it seems that they may be tempted to change their image when they wander the faceless internet surrounded by thousands of users who hide their identities behind pseudonyms. However, they failed to gather enough evidence.

Instead, their data has led to the fact that inappropriate online behaviors reflect their offline behaviors, as these individuals have a predisposition to aggressive behavior and, based on anonymity, choose to externalize their emotions as part of their "strategy". In fact, research has shown that people who are less hostile are not interested in having political discussions on the Internet.

These figures were similar to USA and Denmark, although both countries differ significantly at all levels.

Ο Alexander Bor, post-doc at University of Aarhus and co-author of the study, he told Engineering & Technology that there are "many psychological reasons" for anger on the internet, including that users "do not see the faces of those who disagree and the rapid written form of communication can easily lead to misunderstandings".

Ο Michael Bang Petersen, a political science professor at the university and also co-author of the study, said that the reason why political discussions on the internet are considered hell is entirely related to the "display of aggressive behavior on the internet».

For example, the study showed that people do not often feel personally attacked in their natural environment, but if they notice internet users harassing or attacking others, it is much easier for them to react.

The finding that people are more or less prone to toxic behaviors on the internet is linked to some previous research that highlights that toxic internet political discussions are driven by malicious people who use the internet as their personal loudspeaker.

This study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences in 2017 and found that people who have aggressive online behavior tend to have high cognitive empathy, which allows them to detect someone else's sensitive buttons.

However, they have low emotional empathy, and in this way they do not experience emotions when they cause "pain" to their victims with their shots.
