Despite her ambitious plans for 5GThe Intel will remain in the processors for a while longer.
Η Intel announced a few days ago that it is exiting the market 5G modem. This statement came just hours after agreement of Apple with Qualcomm to supply its modems to the next iPhones.
Intel insisted it would have a 5G modem ready by 2020, despite strong skepticism from analysts. Now, it seems, Intel is choosing to stay completely out of competition.
"We are very excited about the opportunity in the 5G network, but in the modem market it has become clear that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns.» said ο Intel CEO Bob Swan.
"5G is still a strategic priority for Intel and our team has developed a valuable portfolio of wireless products and intellectual property. We evaluate our choices to realize the value we have created, including opportunities in a wide variety of data, platforms and devices in a 5G world. Intel will focus its efforts on 5G business network infrastructure and complete a 4G and 5G modem capability assessment on PCs and other data-based devices"
"Before Apple and Qualcomm came to an agreement, the future of the iPhone in next generation networks was quite uncertain", Wrote o Sascha Segan, Lead Mobile Analyst at PCMag. Now, “Apple will almost certainly ask Qualcomm to make a custom slim modem based on the second generation X55, which is a single modem that can work with different global 4G and 5G networks".
