Google Pay: As of today, Alpha Bank supports contactless payments through Google Pay and Wear OS

Η Alpha Bank becomes from today the first Greek systemic bank that supports the Google Pay but also the Wear OS.


Η Greece is on the list of countries expanded by Google the availability of the application Google Pay, offering Greek consumers another option in terms of the possibilities to use their smartphone to make payments at physical points of sale.

According to the relevant by clicking here of Google, the service is available to Mastercard cardholders issued mainly by so-called fintech startup financial institutions such as N26, Revolut, Monese and Curve.

The relevant list includes Greek Viva Wallet IBAN. The latter, in fact, in its relevant announcement points out that it is expanding its availability Google Pay in 18 countries where it operates from 11 previously.

The other countries where its availability is expanding Google Pay they are Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Portugal and Romania.



As for the "systemic" banks, market participants estimate that the first that will support the Google Pay is Alpha Bank, while it remains unknown when Google Pay will be available for Visa cards and in other systemic banks of our country.

But apart from Smartphones, the Alpha Bank extends contactless payment support with the use of platform-based smartwatches Google Wear OS, such as the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, but more devices are expected to follow soon.

How Google Pay works

Activation of the service Google Pay, is done easily and quickly through the respective banking application for smartphones through the selection "Add to Google Pay" located in the card settings.

After the selection, users have the opportunity to trade with the card of their choice in the relevant menu directly through their device. This way the banking application or its application does not need to be open GooglePay. Just approach the smartphone near the payment terminal (POS).

Note that the service is available for Android devices, which support NFC technology which is a prerequisite for the possibility of contactless payments via the smartphone.

In addition, the Google Pay can also be used for payments to online services and stores as well as apps, using the payment method that the user has saved in their Google Account. The user's data is protected with multiple levels of security while the process of storing loyalty cards, gift cards, offers, etc. is very easy.

Contactless payments with smartphones

It is worth noting that contactless payments via smartphones are starting to become more and more popular in our country. In Europe it is estimated that they have already reached 10% of card transactions with COVID-19 pandemic to have accelerated the trend.
