So now Xiaomi has filed a new patent that suggests the company is working on a completely new charging technology, which will use sound for charging smartphones and other electronic devices.
The company has applied for a patent on CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which reveals some of the key specifications of this new technology that it is developing.
It's a bit difficult to figure out how this new technology will work, but it does seem to involve a special audio "collection" circuit, one energy storage circuit and a third electronic device. The first circuit will "collect" the sound and will convert it into kinetic energy through the mechanical vibration caused by sound waves. This mechanical vibration will then be converted to alternating current (AC), which in the next stage will be converted to direct current (DC) using a special power conversion circuit.
The current generated by the sound vibrations will be stored through a special charging circuit in a collector which will obviously be a battery.
The way this technology is presented, it seems that at least in the beginning it will concern a specialist Power Bank which will charge its battery in this way, and maybe in the second year when this charging technology is improved enough, it will be integrated directly into other devices and used to charge smartphones and other electronic devices without the need for another charger.
Although the company has filed the above patent, this does not necessarily mean that it will use this technology in the near future. Several factors play a role in bringing a new technology to market. We'll have to wait and see if Xiaomi introduces the new audio charging technology in the coming months.
