When we talk about Xiaomi and augmented reality, very often we think only of the devices they have received Arcore certification, and the glasses immediately come to mind.
Γfor those who do not know, the Arcore is a software development kit created by Google and allows you to develop augmented reality applications. A shocking example of what possibilities we have with its use Arcore on specific smartphones (not all) equipped with this software, is the well known Pokémon Go.
But this time Xiaomi does not mention its support Arcore in some of its own new product, but goes further, and patents a completely new Project of its own for a different use of augmented reality.
According to information coming from Chinese media, we learned that the Xiaomi Mobile Software Co. Ltd. (this is the full name of the company), has received a new patent with the publication number CN110264320B and entitled (translation from Chinese) “Method of displaying information, on devices and storage media based on augmented reality equipment ".
The title is confusing enough to understand from the beginning what the content of this new "technology" augmented reality is, and how it is applied. What we understand from the content of the published patent is that it concerns a new method of displaying information, which will be applied to Xiaomi devices that will support augmented reality.
From what we understand, this new Project is about an AR device that will be used to display information of all the objects that will be in the field of view of the device, and which will display to the user all the advantages and disadvantages of these items.
Simply put (at least as we understand it), seeing a particular product for example on a store shelf, it will be possible to look at it and see immediately what are its advantages or disadvantages, compared to other products on the market that belong to the same category.
That's really one different way Xiaomi proposes to use augmented reality.
The methods of use described in the patent include:
- capture an image of the field of view via an AR device
- identification of the parameters, characteristics and appearance that correspond to the product we are focusing on
- obtaining information and evaluating the data for the product (object) on which we focus with our eye.
- Comparative evaluation of data and display of information
As you can see, it's completely unclear so far what exactly this new Xiaomi "technology" will do and if so it will be some AR glasses or some other product. What is certain is that we are talking about a promising Project that extends the possibilities of using augmented reality technology, and not something that is simply related to the software of a smartphone.
