After resisting US pressure for months, the prime minister Boris Johnson getting ready to phase out the use of equipment Huawei from the 5G networks of the United Kingdom, as reported by Financial Times.
ΕIn the wake of national security concerns, members of the UK Conservative Party have pushed for the Chinese company's technology to be removed from the UK's 5G infrastructure and the rest of its telecommunications network by 2023.
The Trump administration has banned the use of Huawei technology, and the president signed an executive order last May, barring US companies from buying telecommunications equipment that could endanger national security. The order does not single out any companies, but is seen as a way to exclude Chinese companies such as ZTE and Huawei from operating in the US. Last week, Trump extended the ban to May of 2021.
The United States has said Huawei could create backdoors in network infrastructure, ostensibly to help spy efforts by the Chinese government, a claim Huawei has repeatedly denied. Trump reportedly contacted Johnson earlier in the year to discuss the issue, and at least one member of Congress said the United States was reviewing its cooperation with the United Kingdom.
Johnson had limited the number of equipment supplied by Huawei that could be used for 5G networks in the UK. The British restrictions are aimed at excluding the company from the construction of key parts of the country's 5G networks and to limit Huawei's market share in 35% and yes exclude Huawei from sensitive geographical locations.
In January, it stated that there were not many alternatives to the UK's 5G infrastructure, and Vodafone argued that removing Huawei equipment from its networks would be extremely costly.
