The second "batch" driverless buses will move in and out of the urban fabric of their city Trikala, from next September, with advanced 5G technology, under the program "AVINT».
ΤThe "AVINTIs a research project funded by the "research-innovate" cycle of General Secretariat for Technology Research and aims to integrate driverless automatic buses into the urban transport web.
The vision of the city, as mentioned for this project, is to offer effective solutions, through the introduction of innovative, smart and socially accessible services and technologies to improve the city's transportation service, focusing on the citizen.
In fact, at its last meeting, the Municipal Council of Trikala decided with a relevant decision the definition and approval of the Urban Bus Lines (routes) as well as the respective stops in the city of Trikala, in order to achieve better service to the passenger public, after proposal of the Quality of Life Committee. At the same meeting, the perspective of the integration of automatic vehicles in the traffic web of a Greek city and their demonstration through a carefully planned route in the city was examined.
Driverless buses will run within the urban fabric of the city of Trikala. There will be a circular route that will connect the city center (Othonos Street) with long distance bus, which is located on the outskirts of the city. The objectives of the project, as stressed at the meeting, in the context of a relevant presentation, is to investigate the effects of the installation of a bus line without a driver in the traffic network of the city of Trikala.
The objectives of the project include licensing procedures at technical and legislative level, evaluation of results in terms of traffic, functionality, public acceptance, financial viability and scalability.
Also, the goal is, as mentioned, the diffusion of the results in both the Greek and the world space that will be able to promote automatic driving as part of a future smart city, emphasizing the vanguard of a Greek city in it.
In his statements to RES-EAP the mayor of Trikala Dimitris Papastergiou claims that "to think and act differently is the beginning of the rebirth of the city and the region. No change will succeed if we do not change first. And Trikala is changing».
