The Facebook and Twitter deleted pages used by Chinese authorities to discredit and divide protesters in Hong Kong.
ΤTwitter deleted 986 accounts "tuned in as part of a (Chinese) state-backed operation" to "undermine the legitimacy and political views" of the protesters, the company said.
Facebook, which was informed of the matter via Twitter, said it had deleted seven pages, five accounts and three groups "linked to individuals linked to the Beijing government" for the same reasons.
Twitter reminded that the Chinese authorities have banned it in mainland China. Agents were forced to use a virtual private network (VPN) to circumvent the ban, while in other cases they used IP addresses after unblocking them for this purpose.
Facebook, which has also been banned in China, said about 15.500 accounts were "following" one or more of the pages removed from its platform.
