Is there an end to the illegal "downloading" of movies from the internet in Greece?

Sixty years after the beginning of the first copyright struggles in our country, and with the phenomenon of piracy intensifying in recent years, due to the rapid growth of technology on the Internet, now for the first time, the measures that will be taken will are effective. Last September, the Legal Drafting Committee was set up, responsible for safeguarding copyright and combating piracy, according to the website of the Ministry of Culture.

Technology and cyber piracy are evolving

The consequences of the phenomenon of the operation of pirated websites that "download" illegally current movies are huge, as there are many who, in order to benefit financially and "save" the cost of the ticket, "download" movies illegally, which most often watch with company. The result is that both the production companies and the cinemas and consequently the state lose revenue, since the corresponding taxes are not paid.

Pirate websites specializing in movie screening are a global phenomenon, as the technology evolves, so does piracy. In recent years, some attempts have been made to combat piracy in Greece as well, resulting in the closure of some illegal sites. Within six years, starting in 2009, 180 pirate websites were shut down, while according to the latest available data from the Society for the Protection of Audiovisual Works (EPOE), active Greek pirate websites, including those with illegal subtitles for non-audiovisual works, at 85.

Which sites "fell"

In collaboration with the Cybercrime Prosecution of the Greek Police, the EPOE to date, has achieved significant success in the field of cyber piracy. Many owners, administrators and coordinators of dozens of illegal websites have been identified and prosecuted, who after their arrest, stopped the operation of the websites they had created for the purpose of illegal profit.
