End of sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines (petrol, diesel) in the European Union from 2035 onwards
The debate has been open for a few years, but now it's official. The European Parliament voted in favor of the bill that would ban the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines (petrol, diesel) in European Union from 2035 onwards, in an effort to further push the shift to electric vehicles.
The new bill is part of a wider EU initiative to tackle climate change and calls on the car industry to completely eliminate carbon emissions from new vehicles sold in EU countries from 2035. For the record, the bill did not pass as easily as one might expect, once it was passed 340 votes in favor, 279 against and 21 MEPs abstained.
In addition to the mandatory phase-out from 2035, the bill stipulates that new cars and trucks sold from 2030 onwards must have reached the target of reducing carbon emissions by 55% and 50% respectively compared to the levels of 2021. The previous target that had been set was to decrease by 37.5% carbon emissions, but as we understand there has been a revision.
It will clearly be a very big change for the whole world, if of course the new legislation is properly implemented. Several big names in the automotive industry have already announced plans for a complete shift to electric vehicles (e.g. Volkswagen from 2033), but there are also those who want more time to make the transition (e.g. Renault is asking for a margin until 2040) so as to provide much more affordable electric vehicles to consumers.
