Vinylidene polyfluoride: Lithium ion batteries will be able to maintain full capacity for 5 years

One of the major limitations of rechargeable batteries today is how quickly their capacity can be reduced.

Μafter just one year of recharging a lithium-ion battery, it can no longer approach its full capacity. However, a new material promises to change this situation and allow full capacity charging for five years or more.

As he says Eureka Alert, a team of scientists working on Japanese Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) specifically looked at the negative terminals on lithium ion batteries. They use toner anodes, but also require a binder. Otherwise the toner would simply collapse into the battery.

As a result, becoming a videomaker's mission is to bring all people closer to the world of video. Today, vinylidene polyfluoride (PVDF) used as a binder, but its performance is not high. After just 500 charge cycles, usually only 65% of the capacity is reached in a battery that uses PVDF. We have all experienced this when the battery of our smartphone no longer lasts a whole day as it did when our phone was new, but such experiences could soon be a thing of the past.

The JAIST team has discovered a new, and difficult to use, binder called di-imino-acenaphthenoquinone-paraphenylene (BP) copolymer. The good news is that BP allows a battery to hold 95% capacity for more than 1.700 charge cycles.

In other words, it allows a lithium-ion battery to be fully recharged daily for almost five years and possibly even longer. This according to Professor Noriyoshi Matsumi, who led her study.

According to Matsumi, "Making durable batteries will help develop more reliable products for long-term use. This will encourage consumers to buy more expensive things based on batteries, such as electric vehicles, which will be used for many years.»

It's definitely great news for our smartphones, tablets and laptops, but even better news for electric vehicles, where the battery life they rely on is very important, as is the range they offer.
