The model of 18TB is expected in the first half of 2020, followed by 20TB the second half of the year.
Η Seagate aims to increase the amount of storage it offers on its hard drives within the next year.
In accordance with AnandTech, Seagate is set to release an 18TB hard drive in the first half of 2020, followed by a 20TB hard drive in the second half of the year. The 18TB will use the same nine-plate design used in the Exo 16TB and will use conventional magnetic recording (CMR). However, the 20TB model is a different matter.
Seagate wants to switch from CMR to SMR (shingled magnetic recording), which greatly increases the storage density of a unit by partially overlapping the magnetic paths where the data is stored. This leaves the previous track narrower, but allows more data to fit on the disk. The drive will also use thermal magnetic recording (HAMR), which temporarily heats the disk material and allows data to be written in much smaller areas.
Currently, Seagate's largest units are 16TB and are aimed exclusively at the corporate and NAS markets. However, some of the company's customers are receiving HAMR versions of these drives, which will help Seagate complete its production process on time for the 20TB HAMR drives starting later next year.
Dave Mosley, CEO of Seagate, believes that HAMR will ensure that the company's hard drives will continue to grow in storage size for many years to come, stating: allow us to achieve at least a 20% increase in CAGR (complex annual growth rate) over the next decade. ”
Buying an 18TB or 20TB hard drive next year will definitely not be cheap considering that Seagate's 16TB Exos Enterprise Drive costs $ 420, while the IronWolf NAS version costs $ 475.
