Ren Zengfei: How a poor boy from a small village in China managed to build Huawei's empire

Ο Ren Zengfei does not come from a large industrial family, did not grow up in a rich, privileged environment, nor did he inherit any property to invest in it.

Instead, he grew up in Guizhou, a small village in China, from which he was looking forward to expanding his horizons. «When I was little I did not have big dreams. What I wanted was to have fresh steamed buns on the table, because it was something I could rarely have. And the other thing I wanted to do was go to college to get away from my parents a little bit. I had never left my village, I wanted to get to know other places.»

He did not have a very close relationship with his parents. His father was the principal of a school away from home and his mother a high school teacher. Between classes she had to take care of seven children alone. «We did not have a domestic helper, my mother cooked for everyone. I remember her running home during school breaks to boil rice. Where to deal with us? He did not have time to talk to us, just a little, very shortly after cooking.Things got worse when his father was described as a "pro-capitalist" and led to one of the so-called "intellectual detention centers".

His salary was drastically reduced and the family had to support himself only with his mother's salary, which was 40 yuan a month (about $ 8). As a result, all the children wore loose-fitting clothes and his mother faced the ridicule of her colleagues at school "not only because she wore what she wore, but also because she was the wife of a pro-capitalist."

He does not consider his humble place of origin or upbringing to be somewhat related to the enormous success enjoyed today by the technology company he founded in 1987. The place where he grew up was so small and poor that he had nothing to do with time. He played with mud and stones, and marked birds with a slingshot. «I do not have a degree in psychology, but it may have played an important role in shaping my personality. I probably developed a great curiosity about everything. And beyond that, with everything I tackled, I was totally committed to it. When you are fully committed to something, the chances of success increase.»

But how did he get involved and dedicate himself to new technologies and manage to make Huawei one of the leading companies in the world? He describes it simply as a coincidence and states that if he had not been drawn to the field of telecommunications, he could well have been engaged in something else, completely different, such as the production of noodles or… pig breeding! «Again, I believe that I would have become a leader in my field, whatever field it was. Because I am so completely devoted.»

With Huawei in the hands of such a persistent, focused and goal-oriented person, the company's impressive development over the past two decades should not impress. Today, Huawei continues to receive the love of consumers around the world, distinctions and awards continue to rain and sales of all its products (smartphones, computers, wearables, tablets, etc.) show a significant increase. According to recent announcements of the company, without risks and without great challenges you can not evolve and stand out.

Huawei continues unabated with innovation as its core to offer quality and high-tech products to its consumers worldwide. Indicatively, in 2019 Huawei alone has already supplied the market with over 200 million smartphones, while sales of all its other products show an increase of over 250%: PCs, wearables, audio products.
