Ransomware: Malware that mainly hits businesses - The rules for not losing data

Attacks on computers using "redemption" are increasing internationally (ransomware), of a type malware that locks a device or encrypts its contents and then blackmails the user to pay a ransom to regain access to its contents.

Σnot only cell phones and computers, but also servers and the Internet of Things (not only cybercriminals)Internet of Things-IoT). In case of infection with ransomware (even when there are no backups), the target company may lose access e.g. in invoices and to its customers.

Thus, this form of cyber-attack may temporarily interrupt a company's work or production process. Depending on the activity of the company or organization, an attack is possible ransomware to have consequences for its customers, something that may eventually lead them to turn to a competitor.

According to the cybersecurity company ESET, businesses often consider it ransomware as the biggest security problem. This is not necessarily due to the type of attacks ransomware are more than other forms of cyber attack, but in that often such attacks get a lot of publicity.

The most common ways of infection with malware

Email remains the most common form of ransomware infection. ESET has found that email remains the most common method with a two-step process, where a download program is first delivered when the unsuspecting user clicks on a link, followed by ransomware as a secondary infection.

It is not always clear whether successful ransomware attacks are more responsible for the ability of the attackers or the negligence of employees. Some types ransomware they are extremely sophisticated, others still are not. The risk of ransomware infection, however, is one of the many reasons why companies should focus on educating their employees on cybersecurity issues, so that they know e.g. what links not to click and what to do if a security error has already been made.

Some companies spend hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars on various advanced security solutions, but not on well-trained staff responsible for developing and managing network security measures. On the other hand, companies often choose to accept that there are security vulnerabilities and make this decision because - wrongly - they rest assured that they will receive a ransomware attack.

According to ESET, the two basic rules to avoid data loss are:

  • Make frequent backups of your data and keep at least one full backup offline.
  • Keep all your software - including operating systems - repaired and up to date.

The first documented case of ransomware occurred in 1989. It was called the AIDS Trojan and spread through thousands of floppy disks sent by mail. These diskettes reported that they contained a database of AIDS and the risk factors associated with the disease.

In fact, the floppy disks contained malware, which disabled users' access to much of the contents of the hard disk. The AIDS Trojan demanded a ransom (or as the message called it, "payment of license$ 189, which was to be sent to a post office box in Panama.

The person in charge of this ransomware was considered to be Dr. Joseph Popp.
