Android: Attention! New bug hacks devices via Bluetooth

Hackers near you can use Bluetooth enabled to run malicious code, according to security company ERNW. Google has fixed the problem, but it will take some time for it to work on all devices.

ΝA cause has come to light that will surely make you think of turning off your phone Bluetooth when you are not using it. A security company has revealed a serious bug in the Android Bluetooth subsystem that can be used to hack the device.

This vulnerability opens the door for a hacker near you to execute computer code on Android 8.0 to 9.0 phones, according to ERNW. "No user interaction requiredHe warned. The only thing you need to know is the device's Bluetooth MAC address, which can be easily disclosed when the feature is enabled on your device.

If the vulnerability is detected by a hacker, then he can use it to execute code on the device as Bluetooth "daemon, ”Or background process. ERNW is currently avoiding providing more specific information to prevent anyone from exploiting the flaw, but the security company warns: "This vulnerability could lead to the theft of personal data and could potentially be used to spread malware“. ERNW, for example, cites the risk of a hacker using a "small-scale" computer worm to attack vulnerable Android phones nearby.

The good news is that Google corrected the flaw with the security update of February 2020. The only problem is that Android device vendors may release updates to phones after weeks or months. In other cases, there may not even be security, on the pretext that the model of the device is very old.

As a result, ERNW advises affected customers to turn on Bluetooth only when necessary until their phones receive the patch. Unfortunately, the continued dominance of wireless headphones can make it very difficult, however, the cyber security company says that another option is to keep the Bluetooth connection "undetectable".

This is not the first time that researchers have discovered a serious flaw in the Bluetooth protocol. In 2017, another security company discovered eight vulnerabilities in the technology, which could also be used to spread malware between Android, iOS and Windows devices.

The main limitation with this flaw is the fact that the hacker must be close to you to take advantage of it, so it is not exactly practical for someone to abuse it.

The vulnerability also affects non-patched Android 10 systems, but will simply crash the Bluetooth background if someone takes advantage of the bug.
