According to reports the Mediatek develops a processor with 5G connectivity who will be ready the 2020 and has been designed eespecially for mid-range smartphones.
ΝEarlier this year, MediaTek introduced the Helio M70 multimode 5G modem with LTE and 5G dual connectivity and later confirmed that the 5G modem is ready to be used in smartphones.
Two mid-range 5G SoCs in 2020
In fact, reports want MediaTek to work on developing a 5G-enabled processor that will power the next-generation mid-range smartphones in 2020. In addition, it appears that the company has already planned to start production of the upcoming chipset MediaTek MT6885 for the first quarter of 2020.
The MediaTek MT6885 will be the company's first SoC with a built-in 5G chip, probably the Helio M70 5G modem. This expander will be built in the process 7nm FinFET and will use the last kernel CPU Deimos, ARM GPU Valhall and MediaTek AI core. The MT6885 will be available for Oppo and Huawei mobile phones.
By 2020, MediaTek is expected to announce its second 5G chipset, with the release of the MT6873 SoC. The MediaTek MT6873 will also be built in a 7nm process but with 25% reduction in chip size. This will minimize build costs and MediaTek is expected to offer the chipset to low-end 5G smartphones by Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and others.
MediaTek will start mass production of the MT6873 in the 2nd quarter of 2020 and the first smartphone that will use it will be released in the 3rd quarter of the same year. The manufacturer plans to ship 40-50 million units of these two 5G SoCs next year.
New 6nm chipset for 2021
Following the release of the MT6885 and MT6873, MediaTek will begin processor and chip testing using TSMC's 6nm EUV process. Of course, this 6nm chipset is already being tested in four different models, with support for CPU Hercules and ARM second generation GPU Valhall.
Taiwan-based chip maker plans to complete design of the 6nm chipset in the third quarter of 2020 and mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of 4. MediaTek plans to sell over 2020 million units of the 100nm chipset by 6.
