Pay-TV: Over the Top TV Services Without Satellite Dish Gain Ground

ΤThe change of page that has already started internationally is followed by pay-TV in Greece, with the service with multiple possibilities offered without satellite dish and without installation procedures to gain ground for consumers as well.

  • 240.000 subscribers watch Cosmote TV without satellite dish

It's been almost a year since Cosmote TV launched its Over the Top (OTT) platform and already 240.000 households watch Cosmote TV content through it.

The streaming service, in fact, which is accessible through Android TV decoders, Smart TVs, computers and mobile devices is getting ready to be enriched with new features after the upgrade of the Android TV decoder.

The special team that has undertaken the design for the last three years, enriches the platform with voice content search while upgrading the search engine for greater ease of use.

At the same time it extends the possibility of viewing on TV from a mobile device (casting), and on iPhone & iPad - so far Android tablets & smartphones are available.

The new Cosmote TV allows simultaneous viewing on 2 screens for all content except sports, which is available on one screen and supports up to 5 separate profiles for each user, while there is a special kids menu with parental control service.

All this is added to the moves made by Cosmote TV to enhance its content. Remember that the company invests in fiction series, preparing after the 2nd cycle of the series "Eteros Ego" the new production "42 degrees Celsius". The shooting of the new series started last year in Corfu and its screening is expected for this spring. In addition to fiction, Cosmote TV is turning to documentaries, following the success of "Keros: The Mystery of Broken Figurines" which was filmed in collaboration with National Geographic and aired in the fall of 2020.

In this context, it is planning 20 new productions at Cosmote History, 11 of which relate to the 200th anniversary of the Revolution of 1821. As far as sports content is concerned, Cosmote TV has secured its broadcasting rights. UEFA Champions League, as well as the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europe Conference while the battle for the rights of the English Championship is imminent.

  • The new management of Forthnet has plans for the subscription

Although to date the burden has fallen on administrative and shareholder changes, the further development of pay-TV services on demand by Nova has been announced by Forthnet.

According to the latest newsletter, the possibility of providing content services in other media (eg Internet and mobile telephony) is being promoted with the information stating that a corresponding Over The Top platform on the part of Nova will not be long in coming.

The first moves in this direction have already been made with the Novaflix platform, which provides access to movies, series on all four Novacinema and Novalife channels, as well as Fox and Fox Life.

«Our goal is through United Group - the leading telecommunications and media provider in South East Europe, acquired in 2019 - to invest in high quality TV content to enhance Forthnet's entertainment and sports product, in order to increase Nova subscribersHas been announced in an earlier interview by its leader BC Partners and its president Forthnet Nikos Stathopoulos.

As the company has not further opened its papers for its future plans, it remains to be seen whether it will choose to return to local productions or co-productions of entertainment content, a field in which it has years of experience and many distinctions, participating in the production of large commercial hits, such as "Safe Sex" but also award-winning films such as "Fang" by Lanthimos.

However, according to recent statements by its current leader Forthnet, Mr. Nikos Stathopoulos, one of the goals concerns the improvement of the television product, both entertainment and sports. Remember that Nova, in addition to the Greek championship, has secured the German, Italian, French and Spanish.

Service Over The Top has also launched the Vodafone TV, which is the official "home" of HBO in Greece and recently incorporated Netflix into its platform, with an independent subscription of course. In the midst of a pandemic, the company released its pay-TV service Vodafone TV and now all consumers regardless of provider have access to content via smartphone, tablet and soon SmartTV from the service website www.vodafone.gr/tv.

Subscription without TV dish with a small decoder had already been launched in the spring of 2018 and Wind Vision the first Greek pay tv that collaborated with Netflix, even offering the possibility of payment of the international platform through its account. Its handling Wind Vision is also possible via mobile phone with the application being available for Android and iOS.

  • The pie of pay-TV

The pay-TV market is in full swing today almost 1,1 million subscribers excluding this number, those Greeks who maintain an account on international platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV + etc.

Of these About 575.000 thousand are subscribers of Cosmote TV, while about them 456.500 are Nova subscribers, according to at least the latest financial statements of the company. This is followed by Vodafone, whose subscribers reach the 150.000 according to the latest update and finally the Wind Vision with About 72.000 subscribers.

As for the international players, Netfl has the lead in subscriptionsix, whose subscribers according to unofficial information exceeds 400.000. The share of other providers remains unknown. In the case of Apple TV + it could be high - not of course at the levels mentioned above - as the company last year offered a free annual subscription with every purchase of an iPhone, iMac etc. The question, however, is how many of these subscribers will be able to retain once the free trial is over. As for the Amazon Prime, market participants estimate that its penetration in the Greek market remains small due to the absence of Greek subtitles and Greek menu.

What is certain is that, as the numbers show, many households opt for more than one subscription, which encourages providers to invest more in content and adopt even more technological innovations.
