Η Cyber Crime, the "hunt" begins for citizens who have illegal pay TV systems

After the dismantling of a circuit of pay TV "pirates" which had managed to secure profits above 25 million euros, now those who used the illegal software to watch subscription channels in Greece will be searched.

In the possession of many arrested,  handwritten electronic lists, Customer lists, but also names of individuals, who had a special player installed and with keys illegally entered subscription channels. It all worked by word of mouth for many years. The "heads" bought a regular subscription and with their own software, even using artificial intelligence, broadcast the program of each subscription channel in real time.

As he says Dnews, The lawyer Nikos Siamakis,

the difficult thing now for the prosecution is to prove that this particular person had the decoder or used the keys. Because you saying that he is my client doesn't mean anything. Those who had those specific decoders have thrown them away.

But how will the prosecution be led to the circuit? As pointed out by Mr. Siamakis,

the circuit had an illegal system that distributed codes and logged in the specific service. They will open and see which IPs were connecting to that software. From the IPs, they will find out who the users are, and there they will initiate intersections. With IP, there is a prima facie case to start an investigation and prosecute the owners of these software. Only with the list, nothing is done. IP traces must be investigated. There are now the technological means to "crack", illegal systems and find a lot of evidence.

If the provider of the illegal subscription has a server abroad, then, as Mr. Siamakis, the task of the Greek authorities becomes even more difficult, because judicial assistance must be requested from the specific country. Then the matter will take a long time to clear up. Providers will also need to provide information from their customers so they can be cross-referenced. In other words, let's see the day and time when the illegals entered the platforms".

From then on, according to Mr.Siamaki, there will be many subcases. If, for example, some illegal user has the wifi unlocked. There, the prosecution will have to cross another element. That the owner of this IP, connected to the illegal software or not. Because someone else who is in a nearby house, can be this illegal.

For individuals, the penalties start from one month and 15.000 euros and can reach up to five years.

Finally, according to Mr. Siamaki, the subscription channels in Greece should invest in higher levels of encryption and in general security of their platforms. Their security is now technically outdated. Also, the reduction of prices could, due to competition, put the illegals "out of the fight".
