UN: US-China ahead of artificial intelligence race

The United States and China are ahead of the rest of the world in the race for dominance in artificial intelligence, according to a study by the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), published on Thursday.

ΌAccording to Reuters, the study found that the American IBM has by far the largest portfolio of artificial intelligence patents, with 8.920 patents, surpassing Microsoft, which is at 5.930, and a group mainly of Japanese consortia.

China accounts for 17 of the top 20 academic institutions involved in patenting artificial intelligence, while the People's Republic looks particularly strong in the fast-growing deep learning industry, a machine learning technique that includes speech recognition systems.

"The United States and China have obviously taken the lead. "It's very advanced in this area, in terms of the number of applications and in scientific publications," Francis Gary, WIPO's director general, told a news conference.

It is recalled that US President Donald Trump has accused China of stealing American innovations and technology and imposed $ 234 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, to punish Beijing, which has rejected these accusations from the US and others. their allies, accusing the People's Republic of financial espionage and theft of intellectual property and corporate secrets.

Gary acknowledged that there were accusations about China's attitude. However, there is no doubt that the country has "embraced" the global copyright system, with the world's largest patent office and the largest number of copyright applications. "They are important players in the field of intellectual property," he said.

Machine learning patent applications grew at an average annual rate of 28% in 2013-2016 (the last year for which data are available, due to a period of 18 months before confidentiality applications are publicly disclosed). Much of this increase is due to deep learning, which surpassed robotics, as it jumped from 118 patent applications in 2013 to 2.399 in 2016. The most popular application of artificial intelligence was computer vision.
