Russia is disconnected from the internet

It plans to disconnect from the world wide web Russia, something that is going to happen before April 1, but no exact date has been given yet.

Η This move will be made in the context of testing the country's cyber defense against cyber attack. A draft law has already been submitted to the Russian Parliament that promotes the necessary technological changes, so that Russia can operate its internet completely independently of the global internet infrastructure, APE-MPE reports, citing the BBC.

The law, called the "National Digital Economy Program," calls, among other things, for domestic access providers to internet, to ensure that they can operate in isolation, in the event of an outside cyber attack.

This practically means that the data circulating on the Russian Internet will remain exclusively within the country, instead of being routed through foreign Internet nodes and networks.

Russian providers generally agree, although they disagree on how the plan should be implemented, fearing that the test could seriously disrupt data traffic on the Russian Internet.

However, the Russian government will help them financially in order to bring about changes in their network and other technical infrastructure.

Russia will also have to set up its own naming system for computer networks using the IP (Domain Name System or DNS) protocol.

NATO and some countries have at times threatened to impose sanctions on Russia in retaliation for cyber attacks and other online interventions that the country is accused of doing (denies it).

The raising of national barriers in the world internet can have a dual function: on the one hand to prevent malicious and unwanted mass penetration inside the country in case of crisis, on the other hand to control what online information from other countries can be accessed by the citizens of the country itself.

Some analysts believe that the Russian government, in addition to cyber defense, has the ultimate goal of creating a system of widespread online censorship similar to that already set up by China. Chinese users may not link to websites that the Chinese government deems dangerous, subversive or anti-social.

Apart from deliberate cutting, a country can be cut off from the world wide web without its will. This happened e.g. in Mauritania for two days in 2018, when the submarine cable that connected it to the international Internet was cut - probably by a fishing trawl.
