On the occasion of this year Secure Internet Day η Google presents the results of a research commissioned by YouGov on the topic of privacy and internet security, along with useful tips for using the internet safely.

ΌEveryone knows that internet security is important. But how many Greeks really do even the basics to protect themselves on the internet? On the other hand, when it comes to online settings, 34% use the same password for some or all of the online services they use while 11% never change it. Finally, 20% have never used a second level of protection on their account, such as two-step verification, while 38% use only a few accounts but not all.

In the question 'How many times do you update your browser?', 22% of respondents say they do it several times in the same month, but 12% said they update it less than once every 6 months while more than 14% said they never update.

But what is the information that the Greeks want to protect more? 59% are mainly concerned about their financial information (such as bank details), 16% are concerned about their personal information (such as home address), 6% are concerned about personal information (such as photos) and 7% are concerned about tracking emails. sending to colleagues.

O Claudio Monteverde, Manager, Corporate Communication & Public Affairs for Italy, Greece, Malta, stated:

At Google, we create tools to protect what we do, so that our users can be sure that their personal data is safe. However, there are still some best practices that you and your family can follow to ensure that you are safe not only while using Google but also while browsing the web. On the occasion of Secure Internet Day we are happy to share with you some useful tips: ”

Update your software

To protect your online activities, it is very important that you always use the latest software, operating system and applications on all your devices. Some services, such as Google Chrome, are automatically updated while others alert users about when to update them.

  1. Use unique, strong passwords
Using the same password to connect to different accounts puts you at greater risk for your security. It is like using the same key to open the doors of your home, office and car. Whoever has access to it has access to all your belongings. To reduce the risk, use a different code for each one and try to make each code difficult to guess and consist of at least eight characters. Choose to use a password manager, such as the one created in your Chrome, to help you create, secure, and control all the passwords for your online accounts.
  2. Do a security check
Google Security Check offers personalized security tips that can help enhance the security of your Google Account. Not only does it help you stay safe when you use Google, it also contains helpful tips for keeping you safe when browsing the web in general, such as adding a screen lock app, reviewing third-party access to your Google Account data, and learning which sites and applications you may have allowed to sign in through your Google Account. Visit it https://myaccount.google.com/security-checkup to do your own Security Check.
  3. Set and keep a retrieved phone number or email up to date
Adding recovery information, such as phone number or email, can help you recover your account faster if you lose access to it or are unable to log in. If this information changes, remember to update the application. In many cases, a phone number or email address can be used to alert you to suspicious activity in your account or to block someone trying to use it without your permission. For example, if an unknown device is used to sign in to your Google Account, you may be asked to verify that the connection is authorized by entering a code sent to the recovery phone number. To set up retrieval information in your Google Account, visit security.google.com and click on "Personal Information".
  4. Set 2-step verification
Take one more step to secure your accounts by setting up 2-step verification, which requires you to use a second step in addition to your username and password to log in to your account. Examples of second verification steps include: a six-digit code generated by an application, a query you receive on a trusted device, or the use of a security key (the most powerful form of a second step). Creating 2-step verification will significantly reduce the chances of someone gaining unauthorized access to your account. After setting up 2-step verification for an account, remember to be ready for the second verification step each time you log in. To set up 2-step verification on your Google Account, visit security.google.com and click the "2-Step Verification" button.

If you have children, talk to them early on about online safety and set up digital rules for your home. Just as we teach our children how to drive before we give them car keys, so it is helpful to teach young children the principles of cybersecurity before handing them a device. Once they have obtained their "driving license" online, it is also helpful to set some digital rules as they begin to explore. If your children have an Android or Chromebook device, you can use the app Family Link to do things like manage your Google Account settings, approve or block apps and websites that can use them, and set screen timeouts.
