Google announced at an event held in Brazil that it will add support for the scanning the QR codes in Google Pay or GPay for all non-NFC smartphones. This new feature is expected to be available in Brazil first before rolling out to more markets.

In a post on Google's page, it shows an example of a payment that would need to be authenticated using a biometric security such as a fingerprint. This extra measure is very useful to protect users in case they lose their device or from unauthorized users of the same device.
Google hasn't given us an exact timeline on when this feature will be available in other countries, however, it has confirmed that it will be available first in Brazil in the coming months, and later on in other countries.
