Europol: It is a problem for the police to monitor criminals on 5G networks

European law enforcement agencies will lose the ability to monitor / access mobile criminals due to the introduction of use of 5G technology.

ΩThey should therefore be allowed to take part in discussions and proceedings during the modernization of the networks, the new head of Europol told Reuters.

Addressing EU leaders, Catherine de Bole called for increased capacity to tackle criminals using advanced technology, adding that member states do not yet have the framework or technology to fill the gaps that will arise when networks 4G pass in the past.

Catherine de Bole

«It's one of the most important investigative tools that police and services have, so we need it in the futureHe said, using the location of a kidnapped child as an example. He stressed that European authorities are currently able to track down and track down wanted criminals using mobile communications devices on 4G networks, but this will not be possible on 5G networks.

De Bole argued that European law enforcement agencies had entered into discussions between technology companies and policymakers about switching to 5G too late. The result, he noted, is that efforts are now under way to reduce the damage caused by the fact that police lack critical monitoring capabilities due to 5G.

The head of Europol made these comments in parallel with the publication of a report on tackling crime in the digital age, entitled "Do Criminals Dream of Electric Sheep", which describes and analyzes the use of new tools of encrypted communication, 3D printing technology and advanced hacking capabilities by cybercriminals. At the same time, the possibilities of using autonomous vehicles or drones as weapons by terrorists are underlined, as well as the use of artificial intelligence for the spread of fake news etc.

According to de Bole, police "did not talk much" when policymakers and businesses were discussing 5G technology. «The biggest risk is that we are not sufficiently aware of technological developments, and we have to face this industry. We need to understand what is happening and give answersHe stressed, adding that "we need to be at the table discussing technological developments».
