Ericsson & Deutsche Telekom: Introducing Advanced 5G with Low Delay (L4S)

An advanced 5G feature successfully tested by Deutsche Telekom (DT) and Ericsson, promises to provide the coveted immersive experience for time-critical applications such as cloud gaming.

ΣIn a recent demonstration, the collaborating partners showed how technology Low Latency Low Loss Scalable throughput (L4S) significantly reduces latency in an interactive cloud-based video game.

Η L4S is an advanced function of 5G networks, which will improve the quality of the experience in cases of use sensitive to latency or where time is of the essence, such as cloud gaming and applications Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality (AR / VR).

To illustrate its benefits L4S, Ericsson and DT recorded an interactive cloud-based speedboat racing game, both with and without this technology. This recorded game was then played over a mobile network, demonstrating the difference in gaming experience between a 5G connection and a low latency management feature. L4S and a 5G connection without this feature.

The results clearly showed visible delays in the game (jitter spikes) without activating the function L4S, while in the game that activated this 5G function, the cruising of the speedboat was smooth and realistic throughout.

Ο Alex Choi, SVP Technology Strategy & Innovation, Deutsche Telekom, stated:

Consistently low latency in mobile networks is essential to creating new and exciting experiences for users. Together with Ericsson we demonstrated the unique benefits of managed latency with L4S technology for time-critical, high-speed 5G applications.

We will continue to work together to advance the adoption of L4S for a consistent and scalable delivery of high quality 5G services and services made possible by distributed edge architecture technology to both our developers and our customers.

Ο Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Networks Ericssonstates:

This recent milestone in our partnership with Deutsche Telekom shows how the L4S technology can significantly improve the performance of time-critical, high-speed applications on 5G networks. The ability to ensure low latency consistently is a key factor for many new 5G services. It is also a necessity to increase performance compared to 4G.

Therefore, technology L4S will help to "raise the level" of existing cases of 5G use, while at the same time will enable new applications that communication service providers can offer to consumers and businesses.

Technical information

The L4S is a new technology based on a standardization of the Internet Technology Working Group (Internet Engineering Task Force, IETF), which provides high efficiency and low latency to IP traffic, resulting in improved, fast management of pace adjustment and reduction of network congestion, queue and packet loss.

The L4S based on the ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) of the IP heading (IP header) to indicate in the application the queue accumulation in the radio access network (RAN). Congestion signals are then managed by the sender and receiver thanks to scalable congestion control algorithms. In turn, the technology alerts the application server to adjust the bit rate of the application so that it corresponds to the capacity of the installed communication link.

Therefore, technology L4S is effective in providing a seamless user experience, even when both the traffic load and the radiocommunication conditions change.
