A technical problem on ground infrastructure… knocked out the system Galileo (Galileo), which operates in the EU as an anti-GPS
Νdue to a technical problem with the infrastructure, the satellite navigation system was European Union, as announced by the European Space Agency.
«The incident has led to a temporary disruption of Galileo's original navigation and timing servicesSaid the Prague-based European Global Navigation Satellite Service, adding that the Galileo search and rescue system used to detect distress signals at sea or in the mountains was still operational.
Galileo is the fourth geolocation satellite system in the world, after those created by Washington, Russia and China, and has been enacted by the EU as a more accurate alternative to US GPS. The EU has spent around € 10 billion on the system, which has been in operation since late 2016 and is set to be fully operational by mid-2020, supported by 30 orbiting satellites.
The current problems with the newly established system were first reported on Thursday, but by Saturday night all 22 satellites in orbit were reported as offline. There was an official announcement on Sunday, while GNSS did not give a timetable for resolving the issue.
Currently, only a limited number of consumer mobile phones are equipped to receive the Galileo signal, however in the future it will serve hundreds of millions of people and it is understood that any malfunction will cause very big problems.
