Within five months of operation, the American streaming service for subscription videos Disney Plus gained 50 million subscribers worldwide, according to a company announcement.
Η Disney had announced on February 3 that the number of Disney Plus subscribers was 28,6 million, which means that in two months more than 21 million subscriptions were added.
The number of 50 million subscribers is well ahead of the company's forecasts - and those of Wall Street, according to Variety. Disney, unveiling the streaming service action plan for investors a year ago, had set a target of 60 to 90 million subscribers by the end of fiscal year 2024. Disney Plus could achieve that goal four years earlier.
The VOD subscription product has gained momentum in the last two weeks, when it was released in eight Western European countries - England, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, France (after a two-week delay ordered by government) and Switzerland. In addition, Disney Plus officially launched on April 3 in India, in conjunction with the existing Hotstar service. In less than a week, according to the company, India already had eight million of Disney Plus' 50 million subscribers.
Later in 2020, Disney plans to continue expanding Disney Plus across Western Europe, as well as across Latin America and Japan, according to Kevin Meyer, president of The International and Direct-to-Consumer Sector at The Walt Disney Company.
