New digital transition: Will we need to change TVs - decoders in 2020?

Changes are coming next year in the digital signal transmission evolution that will lead consumers to buy new type decoders or televisions. What you should know. The magic code DVB-T2

ΔNot many years have passed since the summer of 2010 when first in Attica and then in the rest of Greece consumers ran to buy decoders or new technology TVs to receive through the DIGEA the digital signal.

It is not ruled out that we will see similar scenes in the next two years as, albeit belatedly, Greece enters the second digital transition as the 700MHz spectrum, ie the frequencies in UHF, will be given to the telecommunications for the 5G networks. It can the roadmap of actions issued by the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Information has not been observed to the letter, but everything shows that if the Greek mentality of acceleration prevails at the end, in December 2020 the completion of the movement may be achieved, which means the new digital switchover is slowly becoming a reality throughout Europe.

This new transition translates to more consumers and a new set-top box or new TV as it will be technically "useless" to receive the new signal.

Before you panic

A key point for whether your set-top box or your TV will "play" in the era of the second digital dividend is the time of purchase as in the last two years most models were DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting 2nd Generation Terestrial) technology and therefore you will not need to do anything other than simply reset the channels.

If DVB-T2 or DVB-T / T2 is not clearly visible on the device, and you are not sure if it supports the technology, you can use the model or serial number to refer to the specifications and test it.

As it happened in the first digital transition, the TV may not "play" but with the connection of the new decoder the problem can be solved very economically.

Finally, if you are planning to buy a new device, either a TV or a set-top box, make sure it is DVB-T2 technology (they "work" normally with the current signal) as otherwise you will need to put your hand in your pocket again. Special attention is needed in your markets as both the import companies and the chains as the season approaches the transition will try to break free by offering the old technology products at very attractive prices.
