Once again, Bill Gates is ready to put his hand deep in his pocket in order to support research for the benefit of Humanity.
Η his charitable action Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been known for many years, so it would be rather strange not to see any action on their part to fight the coronavirus.
In a recent interview with Trevor noah, Bill Gates confirms he will invest billions of dollars to build the right structures for research and development of at least 7 vaccine candidates against new coronavirus, in the hope that 1 or 2 of them will be deemed effective and suitable for use. He also stressed that this process can lead to the loss of many billions, but this is not as big a problem as the lack of time for our world.
This is not the first time the Bill Gates Foundation has researched a vaccine, and its (moderate) optimism stems from this know-how. In fact, he considers that has the luxury (see money) to move much faster compared to the governments of the countries, as it can withstand the construction of factories and the costs that will follow so that once the right vaccine is found mass production will start immediately of.
Although in the end we will end up with one or two vaccines at most, we will build factories for all seven candidate vaccines so that we do not waste time. We do not want to find the vaccine first and then start building the factory, but be completely ready right away.
It will obviously cost a few billion dollars to build this infrastructure that will not be selected in the end because there will be something better. In the situation we are in, however, the few billions are nothing compared to the trillions that will be lost in the long run. Even if we do the right thing and everything goes well, from the summer the economy can be restored, without this meaning that everything will be normal.
People will be worried and we may end up wearing masks even outdoors, and these unprecedented measures may remain in place until the entire world population is vaccinated.
Earlier in the week, the Bill Gates wrote an open letter published in The Washington Post where he explained what needs to happen to get back to normal.
We can start building this infrastructure now, where the mass production of vaccines will take place, when they are ready. Because there are several good candidates that require special equipment, we need to build the right infrastructure for everyone, knowing in advance that some of them will not be used in the end. The private sector can not take that risk, but the government can help.
It is very gratifying that agreements have already been concluded (in the US) with at least two companies to prepare for mass vaccine production.
