Η Finnish Consumer Protection Agency (CDB) has ordered Microsoft to compensate a Finn for an unauthorized operating system upgrade Windows 10 on his computer, according to yesterday's local media reports.
In the decision published yesterday by the state broadcaster Yle, in March 2016, the owner of the computer, while working on it, the installation of Windows 10 started without asking his permission. After the update, the computer started displaying "wrong messages".
The Finnish service concluded that Microsoft had no right to install the software without obtaining authorization. The error in the installation forces the company to compensate the owner of the computer, said the competent service according to the APE-MPE, which cites information from the Xinhua agency.
In its response, Microsoft stated that the man had received the necessary help from the company's customer support. He added that he was not responsible for the programs that the owner of the computer had installed.
Noting that Microsoft did not deny that the new software system could be installed without permission, the CDB stressed that the company also did not deny linking the error and the damage it caused. The service therefore decided that Microsoft should pay 1.100 euros in compensation for spare parts, maintenance and shipping costs.
The service rejected the owner's claims that he lost time from his work.
The members of the CDB are appointed by the Ministry of Justice. However, only 80% of the companies comply with the decisions of the service and pay the compensations it decides.
