Security researchers Vinny Troia and Bob Diachenko discovered on a single server an unprecedented amount of personal data of internet users.
Ο server had stored 4 terabytes of personal data in a total of 1,2 billion records. This means that the personal data of 1,2 billion users has been exposed and is obviously now accessible on the internet.
Exposed data includes landline and mobile phone numbers as well as social media profiles such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Github. In addition, they leaked business history (possibly via Linkedln) as well as 50 million home numbers and 622 million email addresses.
Fortunately The information does not include credit card numbers or codes. This is, however, the largest breach of user personal data ever recorded.
The big question is who is responsible for such a violation. The researchers tried to find the IP address of the attackers in the system, but they only managed to reach an IP that showed Google's cloud services. Many of the datasets within the server were linked to People Data Labs, which has denied that the server in question is its own, which Troy agrees with.
Researchers can not figure out who created the server or why. Also dcan not know who has found the server before them and whether the data has been transferred to other locations for other use.
It is noteworthy that the server disappeared within hours of the FBI update for the researchers' findings. It seems that some people acted in a flash…
