YouTube: Ban videos with dangerous or harmful pranks

ΣYouTube has banned videos depicting pranks that are dangerous or emotionally draining.

This choice was made because of the so-called "challenges", which have sometimes led to deaths or injuries. According to the popular Google service, this material "has no place on YouTube".

However, the service seems to be having a hard time enforcing its existing rules on harmful content. A Buzzfeed report said images depicting or implying sex with animals continued to appear on the site, despite pledges to remove the material last April. Some of these videos had garnered millions of views. YouTube says it is working to make "monetization policies eliminate the incentive" for the phenomenon.

According to the BBC, however, things may be more difficult in the pranks, as opinions differ on what is or what could be considered dangerous. "YouTube hosts many favorite viral challenges and pranks. "Given this, we have always had policies to ensure that what is funny does not cross the line and also becomes harmful or dangerous," reads a message in the FAQ (frequently asked questions) category of the site, which also clarifies that community rules prohibit material that encourages dangerous activities that are likely to result in serious bodily harm. "

From now on, it is emphasized, videos of pranks that pose a risk of serious bodily harm will not be allowed, including videos where someone is misled into thinking they are in danger - even if there is no real threat.

"We also do not allow pranks that make children experience serious emotional turmoil, meaning something so bad that it could mark the child for life."

YouTube has said it has worked closely with child psychologists on what could be described as a traumatic experience. Although the full list has not been published, he points out that there are scenarios where a child is misled into believing that his parents have died.

A well-known incident was the murder of Mario Ruiz by his girlfriend, Mona Lisa Perez, who shot him in a video (which they hoped would go viral) in which they tried to show that an encyclopedia could stop the bullet and protect him, as well as increasing incidents of detergent consumption as part of a "fashion" on YouTube.

Also recently, a challenge inspired by Netflix's Birdbox movie became known, with the "protagonists" engaging in potentially dangerous blindfolded activities.
