The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 uses a unique sliding mechanism based on two pairs of powerful neodymium magnets up and down to hold the phone in place.
ΑIf you're curious about how this mechanism works, you can watch Zack on JerryRigEverything at Teardown. You can see two magnets at 2:35, but these are only half of them.
The other half are behind the screen - pulling perfectly when the Mi Mix 3 is closed, and pushing each other away when open. There is also a tape type cable that hooks through a hole in the motherboard to connect the two halves of the device.
Xiaomi seems to have paid close attention to protecting the tape cable and other internal components that may be affected by slipping. Officially, it claims that the Mi Mix 3 can withstand 300.000 slips, but independent tests have shown that it can easily make 600.000 slides.
