Xiaomi: Analyzes how the periscope lens works on the Mi 10 Youth / Mi 10 Lite Zoom

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth is the most affordable and slim Smartphone with a periscope lens, and the company has published a series of analyzes of how the periscope lens works in the new version of the Mi 10 Youth Edition that was released in China last Monday.

ΊYou may have heard of the term focal length used to describe the zoom capabilities of a camera lens. The degree of focal length comes from the distance between the lens and the image sensor, which is proportional to the distance from the lens of the subject being photographed.

However, since modern phones are not much thicker than about 10 mm (even with the camera cover), the focal length of traditional lenses is limited. Periscopes offer a solution - instead of moving the lenses vertically, with the help of a prism they move to the side, so there is no need to increase the thickness of the Smartphone.

Thus, the arrangement of the camera lens also has a prism that reflects light by 90 °, which allows a much longer focal length. It is also used as part of optical image stabilization, as shown in the video below. The system "Split OIS”Rotates the prism along an axis to stabilize up / down motion and uses 5-element lenses between it and the sensor to compensate for left / right motion.

This intricate assembly is still relatively thick, however, Xiaomi Periscope uses a lens D-cut, which is 7,6% thinner than traditional lenses. This lens is not unique to Mi 10 Youth, as well as the uses D-cut lenses, however Xiaomi managed to make its own Smartphone more than a millimeter thinner than Oppo.

The end result of all this is a 122 mm lens with 5x optical zoom that fits in a Smarphone with a thickness of only 7,9 mm. This Smartphone will be released in the global market as well Mi 10 Lite Zoom.

Xiaomi has not officially confirmed the price it will have, but we expect it to be priced at around 420 euros.
