Mi Mix Flip: See the 3D renderings of Xiaomi's two upcoming Clamshell Smartphones

Today we have the first ones for you 3D renders for Xiaomi Clamshell Smartphone disclosed in recent patents filed by the company.

Τon April of this year, the Xiaomi announced its first foldable smartphone in China, the My Mix Fold. This Smartphone is equipped with a large internal folding screen that reaches the size of a tablet screen when it is in full development.

My Mix Fold

In terms of design, the device is very similar to Samsung Galaxy ZFold 2 and Galaxy z fold 3 expected to be released next month. In recent months, rumors have been circulating that Xiaomi will announce two new folding Smartphones before the end of 2021.

In fact, as rumored, the Xiaomi except for a device with a screen that will fold outwards as in Huawei Mate Xs, the company will release two more models clamshell type, which will be similar to Samsung galaxy z flip and Motorola Razr . For convenience, we will name these devices as Mi Mix Flip, although there are some reports that Xiaomi might release these devices as Mi Mix Flex.

Last week, a new Xiaomi patent for two smartphones was officially released. Clamshell type. The first model has many similarities with Z Flip by Samsung, while the second model seems to be a cheaper variant, without a second screen and with a camera system similar to the cheap Redmi Note 9T. This new patent has been filed in both China and Europe.

To get a better idea of the design of these new ones Xiaomi Clamshell Smartphone, the graphic designer Technizo Concept, has created a series of XNUMXD renders (renders) based on the documentation submitted to these patents.

Xiaomi's new folding Clamshell smartphones

Let's start with the similarities between the two models. Both devices have a flexible display with Dual Selfie Cameras which are placed under a pill-shaped hole, which is located in the upper left corner. Obviously this means that Xiaomi with this model will target young people who are more interested in taking selfie photos.

The screen bezels are much larger than we usually see on most smartphones, and when the device is folded, the hinge that appears is similar to the Samsung hinge.

Whether Xiaomi will be able to build the same system Sweeper which Samsung has, so that the screen can be protected from dust and dirt, remains unknown at this time.

Screen size information is not yet available. Obviously its size will be somewhere in between 6,5 and 7 inches. The clamshell smartphones announced to date, is the Galaxy z flip 3 which will have 6,7 inch screen like its predecessor, while the Motorola Razr 5G will have a significantly smaller screen on 6,2 inches.

Xiaomi will probably choose one 6,7 inch screen, because the My Mix Fold which has already been released is equipped with a screen that exceeds a diagonal of 8 inches in full growth.

In fact, it is very likely that Xiaomi will use the technology Samsung UTG. The news Galaxy Z Samsung smartphones will have Ultra Thin Glass second generation, and it is known that the Samsung Display makes technology UTG available from other manufacturers.

Therefore, it is very likely that the new Xiaomi clamshells will have an extremely thin glass - instead of plastic as is the case with My Mix Fold. In fact, according to the rumors that were released recently, both the Google As well as the Vivo, will also use the Ultra Thin Glass for their own Google Pixel Fold and Vivo NEX Fold respectively, which are expected to be released this year.

In full development, both clamshell Smartphones of Xiaomi seem to be identical. There will be keys on the right side  on / off and volume, and there is a possibility that the fingerprint sensor is integrated in the power button (on / off). At the bottom of the devices will be the standard port USB Type-C, as well as a microphone and a speaker.

The tray for SIM card is also mounted on the bottom of the device, but it is unknown if it will support internal expansion using a microSD card, but it is certainly not unlikely.

After all, Xiaomi, unlike other manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung, offers the option of expanding the memory via a memory card. microSD on almost all of its Smartphones - and on My Mix Fold, and therefore we believe that the same will apply to Mi Mix Flip.

The differences between the two devices are mainly in the Modules of the camera that they have, and which are placed on their backs.

On the first device, Xiaomi we see that it has added a second small screen, similar to the one we saw in My 11 Ultra presented earlier this year. This second small screen will be very useful for displaying various information and notification icons as in My 11 Ultra, and the owners of the device will be able to use the much better sensors of the rear camera to take their selfie photos, which of course will be of better quality than the front Selfie camera that will be on the front screen.

On the same Module, there are two cameras with relatively large lenses, which, however, protrude slightly from the housing. This suggests that there will be no built-in telephoto lens, and it is possible that Xiaomi will equip this model with a main wide-angle camera and a second wide-angle lens - as will the case with the Galaxy z flip 3.

Generally, Smartphones type clamshell are usually cheaper than their counterparts Fold Smartphone, and are not equipped with the most advanced camera systems.

The My Mix Fold Xiaomi is equipped with a triple camera device, which consists of a main camera with a sensor in 108MP, a super-wide-angle lens in 13MP and one tele-macro camera in 8MP which in fact is equipped with one Liquid lens, used for the first time in the world on a smartphone.

Instead of a fixed lens, Xiaomi at My Mix Fold used a liquid lens, with which you can shoot Macro photosas well as to have and 3x optical zoom. Although Xiaomi has put a lot of emphasis on this lens with the Mi Mix Fold, it is almost impossible to see it on any of Xiaomi's upcoming clamshell Smartphones.

Maybe Xiaomi will finally choose a camera sensor in 108MP for the main camera, as it has done in many new devices that have been released recently.

Let's now get to the second device patented by Xiaomi with a patent, which seems to have a lower price than the first and may be referred to as Mi Mix Flip Lite.

By the way, both patent applications were filed on the same day (September 30, 2020) in Europe and were also published on the same day (9 July 2021).

As we have already pointed out above, this model is identical to the previous device in terms of screen, hinge and Dual Selfie Cameras, however on the back of the device we have a completely different Camera Module. This time, Xiaomi has chosen a Module that has a round design on which the three camera lenses are housed.

This device does not have a second small screen, and the design of the Module is very similar to what we have seen in the extremely affordable Redmi Note 9T. The lenses are also smaller than the first model, and all this shows that the cameras that the device will have will be less impressive.

The fact that Xiaomi completely omits the second screen in this model, shows that we will be dealing with a cheaper model of this series.

The Benefits of a Flip Phone (Clamshell)

A folding Clamshell type smartphone has many advantages over regular Fold smartphones. One of their major advantages is that clamshells are much more compact and smaller in size when folded so that they can fit comfortably in a bag or pocket.

In addition, the clamshell are significantly lighter than Fold Smartphone, and surely this is something that is especially felt in everyday use. Also, in terms of price, they are usually quite cheaper than the corresponding Fold Smartphones. For example, Samsung released Z Fip (Clamshell) with retail price at 1500 €, that is, it is against 25% cheaper than Z fold which has a retail price that reaches 2000€.

Regardless of the design choices that the Xiaomi, it is certain that the clamshell Its devices will have a much lower selling price than Samsung. TheMy Mix Fold by Xiaomi, when first released in China had a suggested retail price on 10.000 yuan, that is, it was about 20% cheaper than From Fold 2 of Samsung, which was released in China at a price of 12.500 yuan.

Of course this is just a patent, and we do not know anything so far about the other specifications of the device, and there is no certainty as to whether it will eventually be available on the market.
