The Xiaomi Mi A2 now supports Project Fi… or better yet Google Fi

Σthe distant 2015, Google started a program called Project Fi promising to revolutionize mobile telephony: the proposal was to allow the user to make calls and stay connected regardless of the network, the contract with the operator or the device used. This project started with American exclusivity and then expanded to 170 countries , making more and more devices compatible with different brands. So, from today, the Xiaomi Mi A2 will support this new revolutionary Project Fi, which, however, was renamed Google Fi!

But let's read an older article to better understand what "revolutionary" this Google Project's service has to offer.

Article from 2016

ΣThe Mobile World Congress of 2015, the then head of products and services and now its CEO GoogleSundar Pizza, he announced with pride Project Fi(as long as it does not sit on you, it is pronounced "Project fai"), an innovative idea that his company aspired to see succeed in the coming months. Having successfully passed a multi-month trial period, Project Fi was officially introduced this year by Google, this time as a commercial service, aiming to show the way to providers to offer truly innovative wireless services. Hence the retention of the word "project" in the title, since Google does not want to be found across them but rather by the side their.

Of course, for a while now you will be wondering about the nature of Project Fi: what the hell can this be? It is an alternative or, rather, a hybrid connection program. With $ 20 fixed cost, whoever chooses it enjoys it unlimited calls and messages, low roaming charges (we are talking about a service offered in the US where roaming lives and reigns) and the ability to use the device as a hotspot. For the internet, now, the cost is at $ 10 per GB with the user paying only for the data he uses (for example if he uses 800 MB $ 2 will be credited to his account, while if he needs a total of 1,45 GB, then he will be charged an extra $ 4,5).

But where is the innovation in all this?

The Project Fi connects mobile networks in the most efficient way so far with Wi-fi. What we mean: the service scans the space for available wireless networks and as soon as it detects the one with the strongest signal and the highest speeds, it connects automatically, without the user having to do the slightest thing, routing calls, messages and of course everything online. Essentially here is the big profit for anyone who decides to try Project Fi, to save money by connecting to available wireless networks. If the signal is now weak or there is not even access to Wi-Fi, then Fi selects either its network Sprint, or her T-Mobile - Do you understand now why Google does not want to find providers?

Those who have used it so far, have to say about its low charges and the significantly lower bills they receive, compared to what they paid to their providers. But not everything is rosy in Google's project. First let's clarify that Project Fi only works on three devices: the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6 of Motorola and Nexus 6P of Huawei and of course it clearly concerns the USA. Beyond that, a lot has been heard about Google's choice to partner with their providers weaker networks in the top four in the US (Verizon and AT&T dominate). Also, given that the profit for the subscriber is in the use of Wi-Fi, Project Fi "takes off" in use within the city –As urban environments are flooded with wireless networks. And last but not least, Project Fi is currently available on USA. Not a word about Europe…

The bottom line is that Fi seems to be a project that it's going great for Google. The number of interested parties is increasing and the company itself seems willing to invest in it by supporting it. But the main thing is that he… essentially βα put the "germ" in other, big Technology companies (everywhere providers and of course MicrosoftApple, and Facebook), forcing them to somehow start working in that direction as well. Until we all reach the levels of countries like JapanThe Sweden and Korea, where LTE networks are faster than their Wi-Fi counterparts.

So at the moment Xiaomi Mi A2 has been added to the official compatibility list of the service, and it is certain that the device has received the coveted license to enter the US market, and the Xiaomi will be among the first who will be able to use this service.

As far as Greece is concerned, all this seems very far away as goals of implementation and licensing of use, but at least we can hope that at some point the service will come here as well.
