Xiaomi & Tencent: Accused of illegal collection of personal data by MIIT

The giants Xiaomi and Tencent accused of illegal data collection on their own account.

ΈWe have seen many times in the past that large Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and Tencent have been accused by the West of collecting and misusing citizens' personal data. This time, however, China and its government are to blame.

Xiaomi and Tencent are accused of illegally collecting data on their own account. The news became known from Fossbytes. In a post, the website states that the Chinese government has included the two giants among the largest companies in the country that illegally collect users' personal data. In particular, the Ministry of Industry, Information and Technology (MIIT) has compiled a list of 41 applications that violate national laws regarding the collection and resale of personal data.

Among the applications in this list are Xiaomi Finance, Tencent QQ (messaging service) and QQ Reading (eBooks platform). There are also applications from other Chinese giants such as Sina Corp (owner of the social network Weibo) and some popular news websites in China (36Kr and Sohu News). In addition to the above, FlashEX is also being prosecuted by the Chinese authorities.

According to Fossbytes, Chinese regulators are stepping up their efforts to crack down on applications that are not very sensitive to users' privacy.

The services with a large user base are highly controlled by the MIIT services. The Chinese ministry launched a campaign last month to blacklist and block mobile applications that do not comply with applicable laws on the collection and commercial use of personal data. In this regard, MIIT also clarified that an independent body will be responsible for the careful study of applications with a large number of downloads.

Since the launch of this initiative, more than 8.000 applications that have been identified as using questionable practices have already been pointed out and the authorities have taken the necessary steps to return to the letter of the law. The 41 applications mentioned above remain problematic as they continue to collect data despite the campaign launched by MIIT. These services very often ask the user to use a license. And in some cases it makes it difficult for users to delete.
