Toshiba: After 35 years of presence, it officially leaves the laptop market

Η Toshiba, one of the leading and most historic manufacturers laptops permanently withdraws from this market.

Η Toshiba had sold 80.1% of its computer manufacturing division to Sharp in 2018 and is now selling the rest to completely disengage from the market after 35 years.

Η Toshiba built its first PC laptop back in 1985, with the Toshiba T1100 featuring internal rechargeable batteries, a floppy disc drive for 3.5 '' floppy disks and 256kB of memory (kilobytes, yes). The $ 2000 price tag is still quite high today, so imagine how expensive it was then.

Over the next two decades, the Toshiba saw the laptop segment flourish and position itself at the top of the market, but in recent years it has lost much of its momentum. It is indicative of the decline that in 2011 it sold 17.7 million laptops, but when it reached the point of selling to Sharp in 2018, sales had fallen to 1.4 million.
