Huawei: Huawei's first XR chip supports 8K decoding for VR / AR headsets

Despite the difficulties it faces due to the decisions of the American government, the Huawei continues to create new chipsets through the subsidiary HISILICON.

ΑThis time we do not have anything new regarding smartphones, but the first XR chip of the company intended for use in VR and AR headsets.

The XR chip of Huawei integrates GPUs and NPUs (for Artificial Intelligence processes up to 9teraflops), supports content decoding in up to 8K resolution and up to 42.7PDD (pixels per degree) for each eye. In the case of virtual reality solutions, the ideal resolution for each eye is at 60PDD, but to date the available processors reach up to 21.3PPD for 4K content decoding.

The first application of the XR chip will be done at Rokid Vision, an AR headset from a Chinese startup reminiscent of sunglasses. The company has placed an independent screen in each eye and offers a 40 ° viewing angle and 1080p 3D resolution. According to Rokid, the experience it offers is reminiscent of that of a 3D TV with HD resolution from a distance of 4 meters.

It is not known when it will be released on the market, but it should be noted that Rokid Vision intended for use in the fields of security, education, trade, exhibitions and industry, and not in the field of entertainment.
