The short video sharing app has introduced a new feature called Family Safety Mode, which allows parents to manage their child's activity and time spent on the platform. Currently available in some European countries.
With the new feature, parents can set time limits for their child each day, with intervals of 40 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Parents can also restrict or disable instant messaging and block specific content that may not be appropriate for all age groups.
TikTok is dominated by young users, with about 60% of monthly US app users aged 16 to 24, according to marketing influencer Mediakix. In the app, users typically share 15-second clips of themselves, dance, synchronize their lips with the sound, make funny sketches or engage in platform-based challenges.
It is not clear how well the limited mode of operation of TikTok works, as TikTok does not clearly explain the display process it uses. For an application of this scale, it probably relies heavily on users pointing to inappropriate videos. Parents need to be aware, then, that the limited mode of operation alone is not going to be a safe way to control the user experience.
